As the number of electric vehicle drivers in Michigan goes up each year, so does the demand for overnight charging – especially at multifamily homes.
Our PowerMIDrive program makes it more cost effective to set your properties apart as EV-friendly and gain a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining EV-driving renters. When you install overnight charging for your renters, you can receive a rebate of up to $7,500. Properties located in qualifying low-income communities may be eligible for an enhanced rebate of up to $10,000.

Be a Consumers Energy commercial electric or combo customer

Own or have permission to install a charger at a multifamily property

Install any UL Listed, ENERGY STAR® Certified Level 2 charger with at least two plugs or at least two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets on 100 amps of service or install five NEMA 5-20 outlets

On-site charging can be the deciding factor that attracts eco-conscious EV drivers and gives them a reason to stay. And as EV adoption continues to rise in Michigan and across the U.S., properties with overnight EV charging as an amenity will stand out from the rest.
You can choose to offer chargers to visitors and tenants, or limit access to tenants only. You can also set pricing to help recover investment costs.
Participants can receive a rebate of up to $7,500 for every two (2) Level 2 charge ports, every two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets, or every five (5) NEMA 5-20 outlets installed. Multiple qualifying installations can be combined to receive more rebates.
Properties located in areas where the Low Income Population exceeds 50% (as identified in the Michigan Environmental Justice screening map Low Income Population layer) may qualify for an enhanced rebate of up to $10,000 for every two (2) Level 2 charge ports, every two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets, or every five (5) NEMA 5-20 outlets installed.
All installations must meet program requirements to qualify.
Level 2 chargers must not exceed 50 amps or 9.6kW of power per charge port.
There is no rebate cap per property, but the availability of rebate funding may be limited by Consumers Energy.
Multifamily charging sites located in an area where the Low Income Population exceeds 50% may qualify for an enhanced rebate of up to $10,000 for every two (2) Level 2 charge ports, every two (2) NEMA 14-50 outlets, or every five (5) NEMA 5-20 outlets installed. Check the Michigan Environmental Justice Screening Map Low Income Population layer to see if your property qualifies.
To check eligibility:
1. Uncheck "MiEJ Overall Score."
2. Scroll down to the Socioeconomic Factors Section (Section 4) and check 4a) Low Income Population.
3. Now search for the address and then click on the map to get the details. If the Low Income Population score is 50% or greater, you qualify for the enhanced rebate.

We require a separate meter enrolled on our commercial Time of Use electric rate plan (GSTU) to encourage off-peak charging when the cost of electricity and demand on the grid is lowest. Check out an overview of the GSTU Rate Plan.
For the first year chargers are in operation, you will receive a $20/month bill credit when at least 80% of charger use avoids the on-peak time of 2 p.m.- 7 p.m. on weekdays.
We will provide signage for dedicated parking spaces per charge port installed once a project is completed. Signage is designed to encourage drivers to charge during off-peak hours and discourage vehicles that are not charging from parking in such spaces.
